35º- I'm sitting here listening to rain on the roof and was surprised when looking out the window to see large white snow flakes falling silently to the ground. It continues to be (with the exception of one 17º below night) a mild winter. We have hiked on the rather rough trails at the Galway Nature Preserve for the past several weeks. Nothing to haul my camera out of backpack for - some dirty snow, ice, mud, tree roots amidst the watery trails. The shot below of this beautiful female cardinal was taken on February 4th through our kitchen window.

36º- Our first visit to the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve this winter. We were looking for the Northern Shrike which has been seen here this month. Quite frustrating - as we got out of the car, I saw it perched in top of a tall tree by the old canal. As I was trying to site it through my lens, it swooped down and passed right over my head. What makes this bird especially interesting is that it is a vicious predator. It has a hooked bill and is known for impaling its victims on thorny branches. Sometimes to eat right away, at other times to store for later. As we walked down the trail there were several photographers with cameras aimed out through the swampy area. A couple of them could see this shrike, others could not, us included. From there we continued on, breathing the fresh air while the red-winged black birds provided a celestial background of cheerful song. Was happy to see this woodpecker landing on a branch quite near shooting range.

37º- Back at Vischer Ferry today. Some snow and freezing has taken place - cleats advised. Did not see the northern shrike - however when taking a little side trail - this beautiful white-tailed deer appeared up ahead. Photo 1 - White-tailed Deer

37º- Not much going on today at Vischer Ferry. This black-capped chickadee was the only bird heard or seen. All areas frozen, so no ducks, mergansers, etc ... a quiet day indeed.
